Imagine Type Project

Brief: Design a typographic poster using only type, line, and shape. The composition of this poster was to mimic the composition
of a famous painting. The objective was to challenge us to create more elaborate arrangements of type and to understand the complexities of composition with limited elements.

Solution: Out of the eight paintings we could choose from I was immediately drawn to Madonna on the Rocks by Leonardo Da Vinci. After examining its composition, I realized that a main focal point was Madonna’s halo. I started thinking about the halo being a gateway to heaven. The song lyrics from John Lennon’s“Imagine” popped in my head. I knew I had to make the lyrics of the song
work with the painting. My idea was to take the negative lyrics and make it appear as if they were being filtered through the halo and transformed to positive lyrics. My color palette was based on the original painting. The texture I applied was meant to mimic the texture of Madonna’s clothing. The word “Imagine” was vector art I created using the word “Imagine” from the album cover as reference.
